Programme Duration

This programme is delivered over 27 weeks, through blended learning.  Each module will consist of 3 x 2-hour face to face live webinar per module with 5 x 1-hour additional support hours (1 hour per week for the remaining weeks) and one 3 hour, on campus, face to face session if required.

The Certificate in Special Education QQI Level 7,  is also ideal for professionals currently working or seeking to work in various educational arenas the private sector, including (but not limited to):

Programme Aim

This NFQ Level 7 (15ECTS) programme is designed for Special Needs Assistants who have acquired an NFQ Level 6 award in Special Needs Assisting. The principal aim is to deepen the learner’s existing knowledge and understanding of their role in special education through a curriculum purposefully designed to enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and to safeguard inclusive education practices.

Programme Objectives

  1. To revisit key concepts of special education in light of contemporary policy and emerging practice developments.
  2. To provide the learner with strategies to facilitate inclusive education practices incorporating person-centred approaches.
  3. To enhance reflexivity through the examination of biases, conceptions, and experiences and how they impact on communications, relationships with students and other partnerships.

 

Minimum intended programme learning outcomes (MIPLOs)

On completion of the programme, learners will be able to:

 

  1. Reconceptualise knowledge and understanding of a broad range of special needs and disabilities through the examination of contemporary frameworks, legal and ethical responsibilities, and best practice approaches related to special education.
  2. Participate in the development of an inclusive and supportive learning environment through the application of emerging strategies, tools, and techniques for students with diverse abilities.
  3. Acquire a deeper understanding of a coordinated support plan development process for individuals with diverse abilities, building upon prior knowledge, and emphasise its significance in practical application.
  4. Develop positive behavioural support strategies to address challenging behaviours in individuals with diverse abilities, including positive behaviours support plans, reinforcement techniques, and de-escalation strategies.
  5. Reflect on and challenge personal attitudes, biases, and stereotypes towards individuals with diverse abilities through simulated real-life settings, peer interactions, case studies and practical exercises.

 

To avail of the Skillnet Funding for the Certificate in Special Education QQI Level 7, Special Purpose Award, we will also assess applicants for entry to the course who can demonstrate that they are suitably qualified in the private sector and have demonstrated work experience in a cognate area.

These applicants will be considered for access on a case-by-case basis through established Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) mechanism.
